How to Use Smart Promotions (Promote Only After First Relist)
With Smart Promotions enabled, your eBay listings start unpromoted, and promotion is only added later by Flipwise if the item doesn’t sell before its first relist.
Here’s how it works:
- When an item is first listed on eBay, do not promote it.
- Note: If you have enabled a rule-based promotion on eBay to promote all new and existing listings automatically at a set rate, you should disable this.
- If the item sells before its first relist, perfect — you will not be charged a promotion fee by eBay
- If it does not sell before the first relist, Flipwise will:
- Automatically end and relist the item
- Add a general promotion to the listing at your chosen rate
- Note: it takes about 5 minutes after the relist is performed for the promotional rate to appear on eBay

Why this matters
This approach helps you use your promotions budget more efficiently:
- Fast-moving items sell organically → $0 spent on promotions
- Slower items get promotion support only when needed
- You avoid paying promotion fees on listings that would have sold organically anyway
Instead of promoting everything up front, Flipwise waits to see what actually needs the extra push, and steps in automatically when it makes sense.
Important note about eBay promotion rules
If you have an eBay rule-based advertising campaign enabled that automatically promotes all new listings at a set rate, you’ll need to disable it.
For Smart Promotions to work correctly, new listings must go live without being promoted.
If the eBay rule remains active, new listings will be promoted immediately, and Flipwise won’t be able to control when promotions are applied.
Disable auto-promotions for specific items
If you would like certain items to continue to be relisted but not get auto-promoted, you can disable this on a per item basis. Navigate to the item's detail page, click the three-dot action button on the timeline and select "Don't promote on relist." This will allow the item to continue to be relisted without being promoted.
